Using iTunes playlist in Kodi

First off I know that there is probably a easier/better way to do this (leave a comment if you know how) but this is how i did it.

I copied my music library over to my Prometheus HTPC (I added a 500 gig hard drive), I had Kodi scan my music into the library. At this point everything was great, but one problem how do i get all my playlists from iTunes to work with Kodi? After a google search i found out that iTunes exports .m3u files, great! i transferred my playlist over ( Kodi/Userdata/playlists/music ) and there was my playlist, and nothing played, all the track names were there but would not play.

At this point my spidy senses were tingling and i thought wrong path and i was right.

I am using a Mac to login to my device, it shows up as shared device in the finder sidebar, on a different platform you may have to use another method (ssh, ftp etc)

First you have to export your playlist, in iTunes go to file/libray/export playlist:

I opened my 5 Star playlist in a text editor (TextWrangler) and it had a path of:

/Volumes/Media/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Music/

(All of these paths on your device will be different)

I need the kodi path, so i made a one song playlist then opened that playlist in TextWrangler and found it had the path of:

/var/media/Media/Music/

go back to the exported playlist and highlight the path (in this case /Volumes/Media/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Music/) and copy.

Now your text editor should have a text search feature, in TextWrangler it is under Search --> Find

In the find box enter the iTunes path, then in the replace box enter the kodi path and click Replace all, then save the playlist and upload it to the playlist folder in kodi (Kodi/Userdata/playlists/music) and your playlist should work.

Bear in mind the paths and location of the files on your device and platform will vary (openelec, linux, windows etc) but the theory is the same, the path in the text file must match the file structure of your kodi device.

On a side note if you use a Mac it uses invisible files that sometime show up visible in other devices (.DSstore and duplicate files with a underscore)

After i finish editing i use a mac program called 'Clean up non-mac disks' http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/19044/clean-up-non-mac-disks this will fix all the mess, lol

Also remember if you add or change your playlist in iTunes you have to repeat the process, its a good idea to make a new text file with both paths for the next time.

Hope that was not too confusing, hope it helps someone.

Paul
